I would venture to guess you could stand 10 feet away and pepper the thing all day long and one wouldn't get thru. It's about 1100lbs of hay per bale for the round ones, the large square ones (4'x4'x8')are about 1500lbs per bale, or around 30lbs per square ft.

I have used them and used cut off coat hanger to push through target into straw bale to hold target tight. I was shooting at 100 yards though and did not see any blow through.
